Introduction to Mechanical Metamaterials

Abstract

Vibration absorbers and isolators are fundamental elements of vibration analysis and
suppression. This talk starts from the very basic idea of vibration absorbers and leverages the
topic into the world of mechanical metamaterials also called metastructures. These material
systems give rise to several interesting research ideas for future applications from static
structures like buildings and bridges, to moving systems like ships, automobiles and aircraft. In
simplest terms, metastructures are structural systems built of a series of vibration absorbers,
configured in such a way as to retard noise transmission and create regions where resonance
does not occur. The basics are presented followed by some examples.

Biography

Professor Inman is the Harm Buning Collegiate Professor and former department Chair of Aerospace Engineering at
the University of Michigan.
He has published eight books (on vibration, energy harvesting, control, statics, and dynamics),
over 400 journal papers and 650 proceedings papers, given 65 keynote or plenary lectures, graduated 67 Ph.D. students
and supervised more than 75 MS degrees.
He works in the area of applying smart structures to solve engineering problems in energy harvesting, structural health monitoring,
vibration suppression and morphing aircraft.
He is a Fellow of AIAA, ASME, IIAV, SEM and AAM.
Formerly he was the G.R. Goodson Professor of ME Department at Virginia Tech
and the Brunel Chair in Intelligent Materials and Structures at the University of Bristol, UK.
He served and is serving as the technical editor for ASME Journal of Vibration and
Acoustics and Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures and an associate editor for 20+ Journals.
